David Karp, Tumblr's founder, dropped out of Bronx High School of Science at 14 to focus on computers. He just sold Tumblr to Yahoo! for $1.1 billion at the age of 26.

It's the same story over again. Bright kid going to a prestigious school drops out, learns new technology, and becomes extremely wealthy. I don't know if there's any clearer message than that that shows you that you are ultimately in control of how successful or wealthy you become. Don't blame the lack of schooling. Don't blame your teachers. Don't blame your parents.

If you really want to make it in this world, go out there and learn, innovate, and sell. If you're seeking advice or a place to learn how to code, then I've already spent hundreds of hours providing those for you already:

FAQ: http://regoapps.com/ama
Learning resources: http://regoapps.com/learn

And when you are ready, and think you have what it takes, then pick up this book and learn from my mistakes and successes. It'll save you a lot of time by not having to learn all the tips on your own like I had to do: http://regoapps.com/lifehacked

Interesting side note: David and I were in the same high school at the same time. Another person at that school at the same time, Grace Wong, went on to become a Hong Kong TV star. I was just watching one of her shows the other day. Maybe there was something in the air at the place at that time.

Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Talk to someone new. Learn something new. Do something you've never done before. My life changed ever since I convinced myself to try. I could attribute all the greatest moments in my life to the fact that I went out and did it, and didn't settle for the same old, same old.

This guy reminds me of a science teacher I once had in the third grade. I had created something cool out of paper and my classmate looked over to see what I had made. After class, he takes it to the teacher's desk and goes, "Hey, look what Allen made."

I overhear my teacher replying, "Yea, that Allen is something special. He's going to go very far in life." It was awesome to hear that from him, because he was one of the teachers who I looked up to. And I knew what he said was genuine, because he wasn't saying it directly to me.

When we graduated in the 6th grade, the same teacher shook everyone's hand as they walked down the aisle and gave words of encouragement that were tailored to each kid. I didn't think that after three years he would remember all those details about each kid; but he made it a point to remember. And I'm glad he did.

I partially owe my success to him for believing in me. Years down the road when I was feeling quite ordinary and unspectacular, I would remember his words of encouragement. And I would remind myself that if he believed that I could make something of myself, then I should believe it as well.

It's teachers like him that shape the future of our young minds. He always got the kids excited to learn science, because he was the cool and engaging teacher. And the thing was, he wasn't "cool" looking at all. He was old, had a grey beard, and dressed very unfashionably. But it was his enthusiasm for teaching that made it infectious to learn. He always showed us cool experiments and made learning fun.

And that's the purpose of my blog. I want to pay that enthusiasm forward to all of you. I may not teach you specifically how to do your project or run your business. But I sure will motivate you to complete it and do a damn good job at it. Because, I believe in you. I believe that everyone has a silver lining.

I believe that we have it in all of us to create something great. It's just up to you to figure out what your calling is.

Charles Ramsey, the guy who saved the three kidnapped women, is giving up over $25,000 in reward money and giving it to the victims.

Today's lesson: Be more like this guy. Remind yourself that you're not the center of the universe. If everyone just put themselves in other people's shoes instead of only looking out for himself, then perhaps we'd all stop treating each other like crap.

Even if you're selfish, there's a reason not to be. Treat others poorly, and they in turn will treat others poorly. This keeps being transferred like a disease until one day it comes back to you and someone treats you poorly. So helping others benefits you as well. The benefits are just not as immediate.

At the Right Place, At the Right Time

I always find it funny when people say that I'm only successful because I was "lucky to be at the right place at the right time." Well, yea… but so were billions of other people. We were all here and given the chance to become coders and design iPhone apps. Nobody gave me special permission to do so. And nobody stopped anyone from being an app developer. There are thousands of app developers out there besides me.

It wasn't some privileged knowledge that only a few people were allowed to know. I didn't even go to school to learn to be an app developer. I just made the decision to take a large portion of my free time to learn it instead of watching TV or playing video games and what not. And I learned all of it for free online and through self-discovery.

The truth is, the opportunities to achieve greatness are out there and still available. Just open your eyes and look for them. Figure out what are scams and what are genuine business opportunities. I didn't sit around waiting for someone to give me a handout to save me from my miserable life. I said, "Screw it. If I want things to change in my life, then I'm going to work my ass off to change it."

When I see people with lean, muscular bodies, I don't think, "Damn, that person was lucky to be at the right place at the right time." Nope, that's the lazy/jealous way of thinking. Instead I think, "Wow, that person really worked hard and made sacrifices to get that physique." That's the same mentality I have when I see hard working, successful people.

So don't get jealous at me for what I have and leaving comments calling me a "fag" or "chink". That's a waste of everyone's time and energy. Instead, channel that envy into motivation. Learn from me, and become better than me. I've laid out way more advice and resources than what I was given when I first started. Take advantage of it. It's all freely available on my Facebook or Tumblr.

Don't just wait for good things to happen to you. Make them happen to you.

it's always nice for rich cunts to take time out of their busy schedules to call the poor lazy and jealous. makes it so much easier to dehumanise them and take away their benefits, sell them into corporate "workfare" slavery, and so on. great work, shithead. don't strain your arm too much while you're patting yourself on the back

For your information, I don't work in the corporate world and I don't have employees. I was a poor person just a few years ago, and I don't call any poor people lazy and jealous. I even wrote about how I dislike the corporate system:

Every time I stay up until 7:30 AM coding apps like last night, I remember phrases like this. And if you're seeking greatness, I hope this sparks something in you, too, to give your projects that extra push. Nobody gives you permission or constantly tells to you to go the extra mile. That comes from within. (at youtube.com/regovids)
